At MIL, we pride ourselves in providing an inclusive and supportive environment for all of our employees, but it is a special privilege to employ members of our military. Our team makes sure their service does not go unnoticed or unsupported when duty calls.  One of our own, Alex Sutherland, an MIL Salesforce solutions architect and member of the Pennsylvania Air National Guard, took note and decided to nominate MIL for the Above and Beyond Award. This prestigious award is given by the Maryland Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense (DoD) office.

To qualify for the Above and Beyond Award, an organization must be nominated by an employee and show that it provides their guard and reserve employees additional, non-mandated benefits such as differential or full pay to offset lost wages, extended health benefits, and other similar benefits. Sutherland’s submission commended MIL for its acceptance of military duty absence, veteran status recognition during the hiring process, and human resource policies for reservists commitments and calls to active duty.

“Even in the interview process, I was impressed with MIL’s support for the military,” said Sutherland. “Primarily in the work that we do for the DoD, but also in the generous and clearly-defined military leave and support policies established for MIL employees. I was also very gratified that MIL showed no hesitation in making me an offer despite my disclosure during the interview process that I already had several significant reserve military training commitments and deployments upcoming.”

The Above and Beyond Award is given in limited numbers by ESGR state committees to employers at the local level who display patriotic support and cooperation to their employees. Those awarded were recognized on May 12 at the ESGR Employee Recognition Event in Annapolis, Md. David Fernandez, MIL Technical Recruiter and Army Veteran, accepted the award on our behalf.

“The reception was very enjoyable, and what an honor to get the chance to accept the award on behalf of the company,” said Fernandez. “As a veteran, I was proud to be among fellow service members honoring organizations that go out of their way to support their military employees. Working with an organization that understands my commitments and values my history with the Army is wonderful.”
