MIL M&S Expert Selected to Present in “Best from Around the Globe” Forum
Dr. Ivar Oswalt to present research regarding simulation and machine learning at I/ITEC 2019
BOWIE, Md.—Nov. 29, 2019—The MIL Corporation (MIL) Sr. Modeling and Simulation Analyst (M&S), Dr. Ivar Oswalt will present “Simulation Based Training’s Incorporation of Machine Learning” at the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC) in December. This research, co-authored by Dr. Tim Cooley, received the best paper award at the MODSIM World Conference 2019, which earned them the slot to present at the I/ITSEC 2019 forum titled, Best from Around the Globe.
Oswalt and Cooley’s M&S paper explores machine learning’s (ML) impact on the US Department of Defense training systems and training methods. The research expands on what techniques are efficient, effective, and feasible, and discusses emerging/innovative technological ideas on integrating ML into two categories of training systems: multi-person training simulators and LVC training simulations.
“Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are often used buzz words,” said Oswalt. “But this paper presents realistic and relevant ways that they can be applied within DoD training. This is a critical first step.”
Oswalt, who has over 25 years of experience in M&S, works as a member of the MIL Defense Business Unit. MIL recently launched a new M&S service line within this team, which provides services to the Navy by applying M&S tools to support acquisition activities throughout a program’s lifecycle. This allows the organization to provide M&S-based analysis of alternatives, interoperability and supportability studies, T&E planning and augmentation, as well as operational performance assessment.
Oswalt is a recipient of the Hirsch Prize from the Acquisition Research Journal, and is a contributor to the 2017 textbook, “The Modeling and Simulation Profession” by John Wiley & Sons. Oswalt earned his Certified Modeling and Simulation Professional (CMSP) qualification and NET+ certification in 2019. He is currently developing LVC Event Cybersecurity Implementation Guidelines for the Department of Navy.
The Best from Around the Globe forum will be held on Tues., Dec. 3, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at I/ITEC 2019, hosted at the Orange County Convention center in Orlando, Fla.
