MIL Receives 2017 Family Business Award from SmartCEO
SmartCEO Washington honors company commitment to business and family
BOWIE, Md.—Oct. 04, 2017— The MIL Corporation (MIL) is pleased to share its acceptance of the 2017 Family Business Honoree Award from SmartCEO, which gives tribute to entrepreneurial families operating successful and growing businesses ranging from small boutique operations to large multigenerational firms. MIL’s award recognizes its commitment to building business legacies for generations to come.
Established in 1980 as a small business providing systems support to one agency, MIL now boasts over 715 employees across 21 different federal agencies in four key areas: cybersecurity, engineering, financial management, and information technology. As the company has grown, so has family involvement. MIL’s founder, President, and CEO, Maurice I. Long, Jr. works alongside his daughter, COO, Marisa Daley; his sister, Vice President Marty Bailey; his nephew, Engineering Team Lead, Jeffrey Bailey; as well as his nephew, Scott Xavier, who serves as a systems administrator in Lexington Park, Md.
“It is both a privilege and an honor to work alongside family at my organization,” said Long, “At its heart, MIL’s focus has always been our people. We are a company that wants our employees to feel like they are part of the greater good, contributing both to the success of their customer and organization as a whole. As a family-run operation, it is wonderful to see these values passed down through generations and implemented into everyday business.”
MIL’s roots lie in Southern Md., where much of the family still lives. Business meetings started at kitchen tables, which eventually led to small office spaces to manage its first contracts. Today, MIL operates from several corporate locations including its headquarters in Bowie, Md., with additional offices in Lexington Park, Md., Washington, D.C., Tysons, Va., and Charleston, S.C. MIL’s claim to success is not only in its team’s hard work and dedication, but its commitment to long-term relationships with customers. The organization has supported its two main clients, the Department of State and Department of Navy, for close to 30 years.
“For me, it is exciting to help lead a company I essentially grew up with,” said Daley. “I started out a receptionist in our first office in Lanham as a teenager and really got to see the inner workings of MIL when it was very small, while learning the culture that still transcends today. After earning my degree in Business Administration from Loyola University, I struck out on my own, working for other large organizations and even running my own woman-owned small business. Coming back to MIL three years ago felt like the right fit and I’m proud to bring fresh perspective to the amazing organization my father built. I couldn’t be prouder of this recognition from SmartCEO.”
