The entire month of May, in honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, The MIL Corporation will be highlighting our AA&PI Corporate Service Center staff. This week, we sat down with Hao Nguyen. Hao is a Graphic Designer, Junior Analyst on our Corporate Marketing team. Learn more about what he hopes for the Asian community in upcoming years and his favorite dishes!
What do you hope to see for the Asian community in coming years?
I hope to see more Asian representation in the mainstream. I want to see more movies with Asian American leads, have Asian cultural traditions be more widely recognized and celebrated, or see more people that look like me in positions of power in government and industry. We need to make our voices heard as a community. This way, we can change negative stereotypes that have persisted and stop Asian hate that has been so prevalent lately.
What is one activity or dish from the Asian side for your culture that you think everybody should try?
People think Viet food is pho and banh mi, but my favorite Viet dish is banh xeo, or Vietnamese crepes. These delicious savory crepes are usually filled with pork, shrimp, and bean sprouts stuffed inside a corn-based crepe batter. Served with lettuce, herbs, and a sweet fish sauce, this dish is one of my all-time favorites. I’m getting hungry just thinking about it! The best part is that link any other Viet food, it can be made vegetarian!
