Zachary Coho
Systems Accountant
Years with MIL: 3
1. What were you doing before joining MIL?
Prior to MIL, I had been working for another government consulting firm for about 10 years, working primarily on O&M contracts for Momentum implementations.
2. What are you working on now?
I am working on Department of State’s implementation of Momentum in the CGFS bureau, doing Tier 1 and Tier 2 operational support. My focus is on accounting and the system configuration of posting models, but I tend to insert myself into any fire that arises. Now, most of my time is spent testing year end close processes and trying to streamline things where possible.
3. What are the best aspects about your current job?
The best aspects of my current role are the variety, the sense of ownership, and the ability to collaborate with my client. Every day is different, with new problems to solve. Some of these can be solved independently and some require the whole team, and I am able to work with my amazing MIL coworkers and my client counterparts to figure out the best way to approach a problem. There are always competing priorities and viewpoints, but there is also always a sense that if I can build an argument for why my approach is best, I can proceed with it my way and I can truly own the task.
4. Why do you enjoy working at MIL?
The size of the company is perfect for me, where it’s big enough to land good contracts and have a presence in the federal space, but small enough where I don’t feel like one tiny cog in a large machine. My coworkers are warm and friendly and like family. Everyone supports each other and we all have the same mindset, where we’re there to provide the best possible experience for our client.
5. What is the best piece of career advice you can offer someone in your field who is either applying to or beginning a career at MIL?
Focus on customer service. Ask your customer what they want and deliver more. Try to anticipate what they will ask next and have an answer prepared and think three steps ahead.
